Handheld scanner: the shape decides whether people like it
Reading performance across modern scanners is close. What a user notices at the end of a shift is something else: the weight, the position of the trigger, and whether the device has to be put down to do anything else.
Four shapes, four kinds of work
This is the most important choice and it is not about specifications.
- Gun-styleThe classic handheld. Fast and accurate, and the best choice when scanning is the task: dispatch, goods-in, counter. The downside is that it occupies a hand.
- Ring scannerOn the finger, both hands free. For picking where lifting and scanning alternate. It saves seconds per order, and that adds up to hours per shift.
- Mobile computerScanner, screen and application in one. Needed as soon as the user has to do more than scan: enter quantities, confirm locations, take a photo.
- Fixed or embedded scannerOn the counter or in a line. When the item comes to the scanner rather than the other way round, this is faster and lasts longer.

Zebra DS range — corded gun-style
The default at a fixed workplace. No battery, no cradle and no device that is flat halfway through the shift.
Zebra DS range — cordless with base station
For workplaces where someone moves a few metres. The base station belongs at the workplace and not in a cupboard further along; that is the most common mistake.
Zebra RS range — ring scanner
For picking and packing work. It asks for a short adjustment period and then delivers the greatest time saving of any shape.
Zebra MC and TC ranges — mobile computers
When the scanner also runs the application. More expensive per device, and it saves a second device and a second management stream.
How you buy it from us
The same device can be ordered anywhere. What comes with it differs, and that is where the money and the time sit.
- Buy or rentFor equipment that lasts years, buying is usually better value; with fluctuating numbers or a season, renting is calmer. The same equipment either way — the choice is about your situation and not about the product.
- Delivered ready to useConfigured, registered in management and tested before it ships. At larger volumes sorted per site or per user and delivered straight to the address.
- Warranty and replacement handledWe handle the warranty instead of sending you to a service number, and we track which serial number sits where and when cover ends. Where downtime costs money directly, we supply pre-configured spares.
- The old equipment goes back with usCollected, wiped to the standard and disposed of with certification, and you get the certificate. That belongs to the lifecycle and not to a separate job afterwards.

Which handheld scanner shape works best?
That depends on what else the person is doing. If scanning is the task, a gun-style is fastest. If they have to lift at the same time, a ring scanner wins. If input is needed too, it is a mobile computer.
How long does a cordless scanner last on a battery?
That varies per model and per use, and it is the wrong question to steer on. The useful question is whether there is a charging cradle at the workplace: a device that is flat halfway through the shift stops being used.
