Moving without a Monday without desks
An office move is an IT project with boxes around it. The furniture is in on Friday and the work starts on Monday, and in between everything on a cable has to be back in place and working. That can be planned, and it goes wrong on the things that were never in the plan.
Five steps around a moving date
The first two happen weeks ahead and decide whether the weekend is enough.
Record what is there
Every device, every cable, every connection, with a photograph of the back of the rack. On the new site that photograph is worth more than the drawing.
Check the new site
Is there power where the rack goes, is the cabling in, has the internet connection been ordered and delivered. A connection has a lead time of weeks and is the most common reason a move is postponed.
De-install and pack
Shut down cleanly, label and pack. A labelled cable saves an hour of hunting per rack at the other end.
Place and connect
Build up, connect and test before anybody comes to work. Testing means signing in and printing, not that the lights are on.
Hand the old site over empty
What is not coming along is collected, wiped and disposed of with a certificate. Otherwise a cabinet of drives is still standing in an empty building six months later.
Three things that cost a weekend
All three are avoidable weeks in advance.
- The internet connection is not thereA business connection at a new address has a lead time of weeks to months. Order it as soon as the lease exists and not as soon as the moving date is known.
- The electrical supply is too smallA server room asks for more power and more cooling than an office space. That is building work and not a power strip.
- Nobody knows what went whereWithout photographs and labels, rebuilding becomes a puzzle. This is the cheapest preparation there is and the one most often skipped.
