POS systems and branch connectivity

A till that freezes on a Saturday afternoon costs revenue on the spot, and the queue does not wait for a ticket to be triaged. Retail is the sector where the gap between a good and a mediocre IT design is measurable in euros the same day.

A branch network should assume the line will drop. That means a second path, usually 4G or 5G failover, automatic switchover, and a payment flow that keeps working while the connection recovers.

Separate the traffic. Tills and payment terminals on their own segment, staff devices on another, guest Wi-Fi on a third, so a busy guest network cannot slow a transaction.

Plan the work around opening hours, not through them. Changes go in before opening or after closing, and never in the four weeks around your peak season.

What actually breaks in a shop

In our experience the failures that cost money are rarely dramatic. They are the same five things.

  • The line to the payment provider drops and there is no second path.
  • A guest Wi-Fi network shares capacity with the tills and someone streams video.
  • A handheld scanner roams badly between access points and drops mid-scan.
  • A power dip restarts a till and it comes back without the printer.
  • An update was pushed on a Friday afternoon.

None of those need expensive equipment to prevent. They need a design that assumed they would happen.

Wireless in a shop is not wireless in an office

Stock absorbs signal, and a shop measures completely differently full than empty. Metal racking reflects it. A scanner held at hip height sees a different network from a laptop on a desk. All of that is why we measure with Ekahau before placing anything, and again after installation, rather than working from a floor plan.

Peak days need a different rhythm

The four weeks around Black Friday and the December period are not a good time to be improving anything. We freeze changes in that window, verify the failover path before it starts, and staff the desk for the hours the shops are actually open, including Sundays.

What that requires in advance is boring and effective: a tested failover, a spare till configured and on a shelf, printed instructions at the till position for what to do when the connection drops, and a number that reaches a person rather than a queue.

Managing forty branches without visiting forty branches

The thing that decides whether a retail estate is manageable is whether a change can be made centrally. Cloud-managed switching and firewalls from Cisco, Fortinet or Ubiquiti mean a policy change reaches every branch at once rather than becoming a schedule of site visits.

The same applies to the devices. Tills, scanners and staff devices that are enrolled centrally can be re-imaged remotely, which turns a broken till from a visit into a swap.

Scanners and stock devices

Zebra scanners, mobile computers and label printers are the devices that stop the work in a shop or a stockroom. They roam constantly and they tolerate a weak network far less well than a laptop does. When a store reports that Wi-Fi is fine but scanning drops, that is almost always a roaming or channel problem rather than a coverage one.

What should a shop do when the internet connection drops?

Nothing, if the design is right. A second path over 4G or 5G with automatic switchover means the tills keep transacting while the fixed line recovers. Where that is not in place, the fallback has to be a printed procedure at the till position rather than a phone call to head office.

How many access points does a shop need?

It depends on the layout, the racking and the stock, which is why the honest answer requires a measurement. A survey typically produces a number lower than the guess, because most poor coverage is a placement and channel problem rather than a quantity problem.

Can you support shops on Sundays and public holidays?
